Within the framework of an online seminar series, 91大神 Indonesia presents the activities of the Indonesian private sector in the field of waste reduction and prevention. EKONID presents the Online Seminar: Waste Reduction Initiatives in the Retail Sector | 23 June 2022 | 14.00 - 16.30 Jakarta Time

Background

Indonesia produces 65 million tons of waste every year. In Jakarta alone, 10 billion pieces plastic bags that equivalent to 85 thousand tons of plastic bags end up in the environment per year. With an estimated recycling rate of 2-11 percent, about 60 million tons remain untreated and unutilized. Landfills across the country are operating above capacity.

With Regulation 75/2019 of the Indonesian Ministry of Environment and Forestry ("Waste Reduction Roadmap"), the implementation of the requirements from the Jakstranas for the consumer goods industry, the retail sector as well as the hotel and restaurant industry have been specified. Though, for retailers, the regulation requires the ban on single-use plastic bags (after 2029) only.  This limitation does not reflect the importance of the retail sector, which is the primary distributer of packaged goods and a producer of packaging material itself through own branded products.

Experiences from outside of Indonesia e.g., in Germany, have shown that retailers can and should play an important role in the collection of recyclable materials. Indeed, in Indonesia one can observe that some retail outlets have gone further already. Retailers support initiatives that aim at collecting recycled materials utilizing digital solutions. Inside stores, recyclable items are collected through Reverse Vending Machines (RVM) and drop box facilities. The reduction of packaging material is promoted through refilling machines. The use of recycled materials is also displayed as decorations at several outlets.

To discuss the role of the retail sector and to introduce initiatives from Indonesia and Germany, EKONID will organize the online seminar 鈥淲aste reduction initiatives in the retail sector - Best practices and lessons learned from Indonesia and abroad鈥.
