31.03.2022

Today, the German-Indonesian Chamber of Industry and Commerce (EKONID) announces the launch of its new online portal EPR Indonesia (www.epr-indonesia.id): a one-stop online portal for Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) related information and activities in Indonesia.

Developed on the initiative of EKONID and supported by the 鈥淓nvironmental Protection Made in Germany鈥 initiative of the German Federal Ministry for the Environment, Nature Conservation, Nuclear Safety and Consumer Protection (BMUV), EPR-Indonesia.id aims to be the primary source of all information on all activities related to EPR in Indonesia, from the companies and organizations who are taking part in the EPR initiative to past and present government policies on EPR.

鈥淲ithin EPR-Indonesia.id, not only can visitors browse the latest news and events related to EPR activities in Indonesia, but companies and organizations can also list their projects or initiatives that they are doing that are related to EPR in our directory. The goal of EPR-indonesia.id is to provide information regarding the latest developments regarding Indonesia鈥檚 transformation towards a circular economy, including the expected adoption of a comprehensive EPR scheme in the future,鈥 said Stephan Blocks, Market Research & Development Advisor at EKONID.

The Waste Problem and the EPR Solution

The mismanagement of waste continues to be a global issue. According to the UN, around 8 million tons of plastic are dumped into the ocean every year. Indonesia, in this regard, is a major offender. The Indonesian Institute of Sciences (LIPI) estimates that Indonesia contributes between 300,000-600,000 tons of ocean plastic waste annually.

Data from the World Bank echoes the findings above. According to the organization, Indonesia generates approximately 7.8 million tons of plastic waste annually, around 4.9 million tons of which are mismanaged 鈥 uncollected, disposed of in open dumpsites or leaked from improperly managed landfills.

It is with that issue in mind that, in 2019, the Indonesian Ministry of Environment and Forestry issued the landmark regulation titled Roadmap on Reducing Plastic Pollution by Producers or Permen LHK No. 75/2019. The roadmap directly references the target of 30% waste reduction at source, further making clear that this can be achieved by the reduction of material used in product packaging and through increased recycling and re-use. The regulation also sets clear targets for recyclability and recycled content by requiring companies to submit individual waste management plans.

EKONID recognizes that, as an international emerging market, Indonesia needs to balance its rapid economic growth with managing environmental impact and ensure sustainability. To do so, a collective effort is needed between all stakeholders, from the companies themselves, the government and the public at large. In that regard, epr-indonesia.id facilitates partnerships to contribute to the achievement of that goal.
