Indonesia produces 65 million tons of waste every year. With an estimated recycling rate of 2-11 percent, around 60 million tons remain unused in landfills. The existing waste management system is inadequate and local authorities are overwhelmed. With Regulation 75/2019 of the Indonesian Ministry of the Environment ("Waste Reduction Roadmap") concrete packaging waste reduction targets have been defined for the consumer goods industry, the retail sector as well as the hotel and hospitality industry. Accordingly, producers must reduce the waste generated by their own products by 30 percent by 2029, particularly through recycling and reusing of resources. From 2030 onwards there will be a complete ban on plastic straws, plastic bags and single-use polystyrene packaging. To achieve the requirements, producers, operators of restaurants, hotels and shopping centers affected by the regulation can enter into cooperation with i) formally registered waste banks, ii) landfills with appropriate recycling systems and iii) recycling centers.

While Indonesia is moving towards an EPR scheme challenges have to be overcome. At the same time such challenges will provide opportunities for private sector actors to further support circular economy adoption and the shape a possible future EPR approach in Indonesia.

In this regard, EKONID, supported by the Federal Ministry for the Environment, Nature Conservation, Nuclear Safety and Consumer Protection (Germany) will hold an online seminar titled 鈥淲aste Reduction Roadmap Indonesia - Opportunities and Challenges鈥 on Thursday, 31st March 2022. During this seminar the online platform EPR Indonesia will be launched. Through the platform the developments in Indonesia shall be promoted and business partnerships shall be initiated.
