31/05/2022

JAKARTA - On May 24, 2022, the German-Indonesian Chamber of Industry and Commerce (EKONID) announced the establishment of its Hydrogen Business Desk (HBD) and launched its new online portal Hydrogen Indonesia (www.hydrogen-indonesia.id): a one-stop online portal for Green Hydrogen Business related information and activities in Indonesia.

Initiated by the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ) through the Deutsche Gesellschaft f眉r Internationale Zusammenarbeit GmbH (GIZ) via its Business Scout for Development (BSD) program and implemented by EKONID, the Hydrogen Business Desk will provide consulting services to German and Indonesian companies. Furthermore, through the online portal , HBD aims to be the primary source of information related to the development of Green Hydrogen business activities in Indonesia.

鈥淭hrough hydrogen-indonesia.id, visitors browse the latest news and events related to Green Hydrogen activities in Indonesia. Not only that, companies and organizations can also list their projects or initiatives that they are doing that are related to Green Hydrogen in our directory,鈥 said Juwadi Harjo, Hydrogen Business Desk Consultant at EKONID.

鈥淎ll of this is done to provide information on the latest developments of Green Hydrogen technology and to support Indonesia鈥檚 target of net-zero emission by 2060,鈥 he added.

The Fossil Energy Problem, Decarbonizing and the Green Hydrogen Solution

According to data from the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources in 2020, fossil energy (petroleum, natural gas, and coal) continues to dominate energy consumption in Indonesia, although new and renewable energy (EBT) remains a viable alternative.

The awareness of the vulnerability of the national energy security has increased in line with the increasing imbalance between energy supply and demand due to the characteristics of fossil energy that cannot be replenished (non-renewable), as well as the country's heavy reliance on fossil fuels. To assist Indonesia's goal to reduce greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions, as outlined in the Paris Agreement, the Indonesian government is aggressively creating renewable energy policies to promote sustainable development.

Indonesia has yet to set up the necessary policies and regulations to develop its green hydrogen industry. Currently, the utilization of Green Hydrogen is still only being trialed in several pilot projects. Regardless, Green Hydrogen is considered to be important for Indonesia鈥檚 objective of becoming a net-zero-emission-country by 2060.

While there are no official key policy documents for the development of green hydrogen, this clean energy source is mentioned in Indonesia鈥檚 general national energy plan (RUEN). Furthermore, based on the renewable energy roadmap currently being developed by the Indonesian Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources, green hydrogen development in the Indonesian power sector will start gradually from 2031 and increase rapidly beyond 2050. It estimates a hydrogen generation capacity of 328 MW from 2031 to 2035, 332 MW from 2036 to 2040, 9 GW from 2041 to 2050, and 52 GW from 2051 to 2060.

EKONID recognizes that, as an international emerging market, Indonesia needs to balance its rapid economic growth with managing environmental impact and ensure sustainability. In this regard, hydrogen-indonesia.id facilitates partnerships to contribute to the achievement of that goal.
