As an economically robust emerging country, Indonesia also has a strong construction sector. In the crisis year 2020, it generated approximately 9 percent of Indonesia's GDP. Java province generates about 60 percent of the country's economic output. The island is the main target for investment in infrastructure. The current president is trying to counteract this imbalance in the country's economic development with massive investments in infrastructure. Probably the (symbolically) most important step was the start of construction of the new capital "Nusantara" (abbreviated to "IKN") in the south-east of Kalimantan, the Indonesian part of Borneo. With an estimated investment of about USD 32 billion, a completely new city is to be built.
German companies are mainly active as suppliers to the sector, e.g., through construction machinery and construction material plants as well as building materials and construction chemicals. The infrastructure expansion in Indonesia ensures a steady demand for construction machinery and building material from abroad.
